A) There are three ways to request a non-filing verification letter from the IRS:
Online
- Go to the IRS website.
- Click on “Get Transcripts.”
- Click on “Get Transcript ONLINE.”
- Enter your personal information.
- Select “Verification of Nonfiling Letter” from the list of transcript types.
- Click on “Continue.”
- Review the information and click on “Submit.”
By mail
- Download Form 4506-T from the IRS website.
- Complete the form.
- Sign and date the form.
- Mail the form to the IRS.
By phone
- Call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946.
- Follow the instructions to request a non-filing verification letter.
The IRS will send you a non-filing verification letter within 5 to 10 days of your request. The letter will state that you did not file a tax return for the specified year. You can use this letter to prove that you did not file a tax return if you are ever asked by the IRS or another government agency.
